Backup & Storage

Your cards are files on your device or in your iCloud Drive. A backup packages all of them into a single file you can keep somewhere safe, and Manage Storage shows what is using space and clears what you do not need.

Back up your library

  1. Open Settings > Backup & Restore > Backup.
  2. The app collects every card and its review history into an encrypted .backup file.
  3. When it says Backup Ready, check the card count matches what you expect.
  4. Tap Share Backup and save it somewhere that is not this device — Files, a computer, or another cloud service.

If your library is in iCloud, the backup needs every card on this device first. Use Download All from the cloud button in the Library if it asks.

A backup contains your cards, their audio, and their review history. It does not include app settings such as review sessions, voices, and flag and tag names.

Make a backup:

  • before switching Enable iCloud Storage on or off,
  • before restoring another backup, and
  • every so often, if your library represents a lot of work.

Restore from a backup

Restoring replaces the library you are using with the one in the backup.

  1. Open Settings > Backup & Restore > Restore From Backup and tap Choose Backup.
  2. Check the File, number of Cards, and Backup size.
  3. Tap Replace Current Cards With Backup, then Replace Cards to confirm.

Your current library is not erased straight away: it is moved into Deleted Libraries first, and if the restore fails it is put back automatically.

Restore goes into whichever library is active — iCloud or on-device. To move cards between the two, see iCloud Sync.

Manage storage

Settings > Manage Storage shows three kinds of space you can reclaim, with how much each is using.

SectionWhat it isAction
Deleted LibrariesLibraries set aside when you restored a backup, and backup files saved inside the app.Empty Deleted Libraries deletes them permanently. This cannot be undone.
Downloaded iCloud FilesLocal copies of files that are safely in iCloud.Remove Local Downloads frees the space. Files download again when you open them.
Temporary CacheFiles the app generates and can make again.Clear Temporary Cache removes them. They are recreated when needed.

Clearing the cache or removing downloads never touches your cards, recordings, or settings. Emptying Deleted Libraries does remove data for good, so make sure you do not need an old library first.
